Sun Chasing in Sorrento

On a night train to Naples sounds a little like an old Blues song.  Yet 22.20 on Friday night found us doing exactly that - all tucked up in our cozy couchette, water bottles at ready and Mad Men Season 1 playing on the laptop.  We were off to chase the sun, which had eluded us in any real degree for 10 days.

7.35 revealed a watery sunrise, hordes of loud people crowding the ultra-modern train station and mounds of garbage littering the streets, mute witness to Naples' infamous garbage strike.

A leisurely outdoor cappuccino and sflogliato later, and we hopped the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento for two nights.

Arriving so early meant showers, second coffee and breakfast in a cafe whose charming elderly waiter brought us flowers and kissed our cheeks - and a 13.30 boat to Capri.

An intrepid Australian, Mark, joined our little entourage and we took the funicular up the hillside and wandered through Capri town.

Disappointed to learn the Blue Grotto was now closed in the afternoons, Wendy opted to join me and Mark hiking up to Tiberius' "retirement" villa.

En route, we found a Snow White themed garden with Bashful...
Tiberius' villa on top of the hill - this picture was taken 3/4 of the way up
Now essentiallly ruins, the site is perched atop a cliff (all the better to toss off dissenters, as he had been known to do) and overlooks the mainland, Capri itself and far beyond.

We caught the last boat back to Sorrento at 18.30, enjoyed a leisurely seafood dinner outdoors in the much warmer night air and slept well in our comfy beds overlooking a garden.
